Yes, an underlay will help protect the floor and extend its lifespan. If the subfloor is mineral-based, such as a cement screed or gypsum levelling compound, from which additional moisture may evaporate, you will also need a vapour barrier.

No. Vinyl flooring must not be installed over carpets or other soft subfloors. When using a suitable underlay, vinyl flooring can be laid as a floating floor on a levelled subfloor, OSB boards or existing level tiled flooring (do not forget to grout the joints to ensure the tiles are level).

A composite floor may or may not contain a vinyl wear layer. Such a composite floor with vinyl on top is also essentially a composite. Thanks to the SPC or HDF core board, it takes on the desirable properties of these materials – greater dimensional stability and reduced susceptibility to showing unevenness in the subfloor.

Vinyl flooring may consist of a single layer of vinyl or be made up of several layers, one of which is vinyl.
