No floor is as durable as concrete, and none as comfortable as carpet. An old flooring joke, but one that best illustrates the essence of choosing a new floor. Compromise. When it comes to flooring, we choose between comfort and durability. And that determines which type we ultimately go for.
Today we’ll look at what sort of flooring to choose for a house or flat with a dog. Our four-legged friends are very often full members of the household. And your choice of new flooring must also be adapted to accommodate your dog in your home. So what should you look out for?
Flooring for a dog must, above all, be durable
Durability is the first consideration when choosing flooring for a home with a dog. Choose materials that are resistant to scratches and dents, such as vinyl or laminate. A laminate flooring with an AC5 wear class will provide sufficient durability. Unfortunately, the flooring won’t be quite as comfortable.
Water resistance is another key factor to consider. Vinyl flooring can be 100% waterproof, whereas laminate flooring, unfortunately, cannot. Ideally, you should choose flooring that can withstand spills and accidents without damage, such as at least partially water-resistant laminate or the aforementioned vinyl. You should also opt for surfaces that are easy to clean and maintain.

The final consideration is the surface’s slip resistance. Go for a rating of at least R9. A floor with good traction will ensure your pets don’t slip. Their safety is also a top priority. So why not just go for tiles? For the sake of comfort.
Last but not least, the design is also important – you’ll want to be satisfied with how it looks in your home. Our range of laminate flooring offers a versatile selection of wood-effect finishes that, thanks to their surface treatment, resemble timber floors. The German brand PARADOR offers truly unique floor designs that will win you over with their excellent value for money. Take a look at their full range of laminate flooring.
Comfortable flooring for the home that can even cope with pets
Consider the comfort of your pets. And ultimately, your own comfort too, as the main users of the space. More durable surfaces, such as vinyl and laminate, are gentler on your pets’ paws than tiles, whilst also giving you peace of mind. By focusing on these factors, you can choose a floor that will withstand the challenges of a household with pets whilst maintaining style and functionality.
We’ve put together three collections from our range that we consider the ideal choice if you have a dog at home. Or even more pets, for that matter.
